Essay about Synopsis of A Raisin In The Sun by Lorraine...

â€Å"When a cat take off with your money he don’t leave you no road maps!(2.3, 128)† In the play, A Raisin In The Sun, by Lorraine Hansberry, the Younger family each feels what it is like to lose hope in their dreams and have it deferred. Walter Lee wants to start a liquor store to support his family his own way. Beneatha wants to escape from the traditional views on women and become a doctor, but at the same time she wants to find her cultural roots. Ruth wants to be able to care for her unborn child and her son, Travis, in a home where they don’t have to worry about financial problems and to fix her relationship with Walter. And Lena, or Mama, wants to live in a house with a garden where her kids all live happily together. (3, 133)† After losing th e money, Beneatha gives up on hope that she could become a doctor. Walter’s dream doesn’t only impinge on Beneatha’s, but also Ruth’s. Ruth and Mama discover she is pregnant at the end of Act 1. â€Å"You went to see that woman, didn’t you? (1.2, 70)† Mama found out that Ruth went to the abortionist. Ruth doesn’t want to introduce a new baby into a world of financial issues. The way Walter is handling money, Ruth is afraid that she is unable to put a roof over the unborn baby’s head since they are already struggling to support themselves. She didn’t want to add more to the burden the family has on them right now. â€Å"So you would rather be Mr. Arnold than be his chauffeur. So –I would rather be living in Buckingham Palace (1.1, 34).† Ruth points out that she and Walter have different dreams and his conflicts with hers’. Ruth doesn’t care if she is rich; she only wants to have a house to live in where she doesn’t have to worry about Travis chasing rats or cockroaches crawling all around. Since she is pregnant, Ruth doesn’t want her baby to grow up in that kind of childhood. Walter gets angry at Ruth because he feels that she isn’t supporting him like a woman should do. â€Å"You remember how we used to talk when Travis was born†¦ about the way we were
